Use Targeted Resume Distribution to Speed Up Your Job Search
75What is Targeted Resume Distribution?
Using a Targeted Resume Distribution service should get your resume in front of contacts at companies that match your job search profile. This service uses email to deliver your resume directly to a hiring authority at a company that has signed-up to receive resumes based on certain parameters establish by the resume distribution service. The hiring manager knows that the resume has already gone through one level of screening and prefers to views these resumes first because it saves them the time of sifting through many unqualified candidates.
As you can see, a Targeted Resume Distribution service is much different compared to using a job boards. Job Boards involve responding to job advertisements/postings and uploading your resume into a database that employers can search.
Job Board Strategy
The job board approach is very appealing because you get to see the jobs and the perception is no cost. However, here are some real stats and info that may enlighten your search:
- 80-85% of all jobs are filled without ever being advertised to the public.
- More than 100,000 people post their resume to an online database and respond to ads every day. You cannot effectively compete with those numbers.
- Most companies do not have access to these resume databases and thus will never see your resume.
- Even when you do get your resume into an advertised job, most of the time it will never be seen because the HR recruiter has to look at hundreds of other resumes before they get to yours.
- The job board approach takes a lot of time, especially if you are searching multiple job boards. It's not free - Time Is Money!
Bottom-line here, the job boards yield very little results, so do not put all your "Career Eggs" in one basket.
Networking Strategy
Networking is still the best way to find a new job. However, many people seem to exhaust their personal network, do not have a good network, and/or would prefer not to invest time to create a new one. The process to create a personal career network can be time intensive. For example, to do this on your own, you need to call into a company, find out if they hire your profile, then get a contact name, phone number and email address. Now duplicate that task 250 or 500 or 1000 times. Unfortunately, this effort can take weeks or months with our own time and resources.
A good Resume Distribution service will get your resume directly to the hiring contact that has requested resumes - possibly hundreds of TARGETED companies that are interested in your job search profile. This will significantly decrease the time it takes in developing a personal career network and locate companies that match your job search profile.
Here are some questions to ask when researching a reputable Resume Distribution company.
- Is it targeted and does their matching technology connect to companies by job function, title, location and industry experience?
- Can you see the list of companies before you purchase?
- Is the list of companies fresh, new and do they update old information?
- Do they have a process to approve a company (removing MLMs and business opportunities) before they can join their network?
- Can you get access to the contact information of the companies receiving your resume so you can follow-up?
- Can you see a real-time report of who is looking at your resume?
- Is your resume delivered by text, Word doc, website link, or all three?
- Do they have a phone number so you can call and ask questions?
- Does it cost extra to have your resume resent or is that included with your purchase?
- Do they have a money back guarantee if your resume is not seen?
Job Search Challenges
Here are some familiar statements and questions by people in the hunt for a new job...
"Where are all the jobs?"
Consider This: On average 80-85% of the jobs that were open were filled WITHOUT ever being advertised to the public. Furthermore, employers don't want to pay $500-$2500 to post a job and search the online databases, especially with no guarantee they will find a candidate. That is why they only advertise their critical or hard to fill positions. Bottom line - don't limit your search to scouring the jobs ads.
"I have a good resume!"
Consider This: Are you taking a subjective approach on this issue or are you truly seeking constructive criticism. Your resume should have the following:
- Proper grammar and spelling
- Brag material - Sell yourself
- Less focus on your responsibilities or job description
- Explain how you added value to your employer(s)
- Numbers: Revenue, Profits, Budgets, Managed, Growth, etc...
- Career progression
- Examples of how quickly you ramped-up
- Be human and use your personality
"My personal network is not producing leads!"
Consider This: Your network probably wasn't connected or those people may not want to sponsor you. Regardless, take responsibility and never put the blame on somebody or something. Keep your attitude is check. This can be a long process. Use tools like LinkedIn, Zoom Info, and ResumeSpider to help you jump-start this strategy.
"I've put my resume on Monster, Career Builder, Hot Jobs, and many other career websites, but I haven't got many calls!"
Consider This: Monster, Careerbuilder, and HotJobs should not be your only sources for getting noticed. Every day, HUNDRES OF THOUSANDS OF JOB SEEKERS post their resume to these sources. You can't compete with those numbers.
"When I apply to jobs I never hear back from anybody!!!"
Consider This: Many job seekers call this "The Black Hole Phenomenon." It's possible that the employer doesn't like your resume or you are not qualified. Maybe they receive hundreds of responses to their job ad, all the resumes start to look the same, they are frustrated with the response and don't have time to respond to everybody. Don't be a "Job Board Junkie." That means you search the job boards hourly and have faith that responding to job ads will produce the best results (even though most people are not hired that way). You need to decide if you are going fishing or making an investment in your future.
"I'm unemployed and can't afford to spend any money on my job search?"
Consider This: You are INVESTING, not spending. The sooner you find employment, the sooner you will get a paycheck. The job seekers that understand this use many different strategies to finding employment, resulting in very short unemployment or none at all. Here is some temporary changes I recommend you make to your lifestyle so you can save money...
- Write-out a budget.
- Only purchase the necessities - Food, Shelter & Clothing.
- Start eating rice and beans and drinking water from the faucet.
- Get rid of cable or satellite TV. Maybe your cell phone too.
- Don't go out to eat, to the theater, or to professional sporting events.
- Purchase clothing from Goodwill or a consignment shop.
- Cancel or postpone the vacation and household projects.

What does this service cost and how do I get started? I've had a very successful career in sales but after my lay off I can't seem to find many job positions that I'm going to stay with very long. I'm looking for a job position that I can retire with if I actually retire. Granted pay is important but not the most important thing. Being happy with what you're doing and wanting to make the company you're working for successful is the most important to me.
